A transplant from the shores of Long Island, Gary Kaplowitz has called Phoenix home since the mid 1970's.
An accomplished guitarist at his arrival, Gary more or less left the 'electrics' behind and concentrated on acoustic playing and performing. He did some solo gigs at various locations including My Mother's Restaurant. It was during a short period with an all originals 4-piece band that Gary found a musical counterpart that would finally allow him to work more on his acoustic style on the 12-string. Thus Mountain Rain was born.
Though his main performance outlet since around 1985, Mountain Rain has not been Gary's only gig. Part of the Eddie Detroit Band for many years, sitting in with Bob Mengel and 'Suspect', and an honorary Artichoke Sister, have provided Gary opportunities to prove himself in a variety of genres, earning him the recent title of
'Dr. K.'.
Gary's originals are stories and come from his experiences. Musically, they reflect the influences of some of his own favorites, The Grateful Dead, Pink Floyd and Renaissance. Melodic, mostly written for 12-string guitar, and with non-traditional chord voicing, their progressions are full of undertones and have unique ring.
A polished and experienced performer, he never forgets the importance or presence his audience, and treats them respectfully in his appearance and demeanor, and provides them a professional grade show.
